Every year the youth band makes a series of awards to young players who have excelled both musically and as  “bandsmen”. The organisation feel it is important to recognise excellence and to do so in a structured and high profile manner.

The awards were established in 2007 with the trophies being funded from donations made to the youth band following the tragic death of Tony Poulter in a road accident. Tony was the father of Oliver Poulter, who is one of the bands young cornet players, and was a passionate fan of the band. The purchase of trophies and the establishment of the awards were felt to be a fitting tribute to Tony who in life was always a positive influence on those around him. The band was also able to purchase a set of stand banners from the donations as well.

There are 3 main awards made annually at the bands Christmas concert.

The Tony Poulter Cup is presented to the overall “Bandsman of the Year”. This award is voted for by the young players in the bands based on who they feel has made a significant contribution to the band, both musically but also as part of the team. A willingness to help others, positivity, dedication, commitment and friendship are all qualities that the young people look for in placing their votes.

There are then 2 other trophies awarded based on the votes of the Conductors and Tutors of the band to players who they feel have played to the highest standard or who has made the best improvement in the given year. These are awarded to the Junior and Senior “Player of the Year” with players under the age of 11 qualifying for the Junior award and those 12 and over qualifying for the Senior award.

Finally special awards are made on a one off basis when the band committee feels that players or tutors have made special contributions to the organisation that should be marked.
